A Passion for Science and Photography
Donald’s curiosity about the world started early. In the eighth grade he became interested in photography, spurred on by a Polaroid camera his parents bought for him. In high school he took photography and journalism classes, and after transferring to Little Rock High School, he was put in charge of the school’s new photography darkroom, working with the journalism department. He also studied Chemistry and Biology in high school, interests that led him to Oklahoma University, where he focused on Biology and Chemistry as part of his pre-medical studies.
Service in the U.S. Navy
At seventeen, Donald took the oath of duty in the U.S. Navy at the Navy Reserve Armory in Little Rock, with his father at his side. After graduating from high school, he attended Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes, near North Chicago. On his third day of training, he learned that the Korean War had erupted. Throughout his Navy career, his photography skills were in demand. He was often called on to photograph ships conducting illicit fishing, whaling operations in forbidden waters, and other clandestine operations.
Life Today
After decades of exposure in the medical field, Donald continues to retain his interest in the medical world while spending much of his precious time bettering his own health. He resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with his wife, Rebecca Anne Laurence West.
